MMAG woofer The centerpiece for clarity and performance
At the heart of the Dayton Audio OPAL1 loudspeaker is a woofer that utilizes MMAG (Multiple Magnetic Air Gap) technology with two air gaps. This motor technology combined with extensive ventilation allows for extreme cone excursion and control, low distortion and above average power handling. A stiff but lightweight carbon fiber cone and specially designed surround profile allow for incredibly smooth midrange performance, which is unprecedented in a 5-1/2-inch woofer with this excursion capability.
Silk dome tweeter
The upper octaves of the OPAL1 are reproduced by Dayton Audio's premium silk dome tweeter. It features a coated silk dome mounted on a vented aluminum voice coil former to enhance performance. A copper cap and sleeve surround the gap to reduce eddy currents and distortion, while a large damped rear chamber helps to extend the low frequency response. An asymmetrical crossover centered at 2,300 Hz links the tweeter and woofer together for a smooth, non-fatiguing, ultra-transparent and huge sound normally found only in larger tower speakers. The sound of the OPAL1 defies its size.

The OPAL1's bass response is made possible by the use of a pair of passive radiators at the rear of the cabinet. These allow for an extension of ultra-low frequencies in a small enclosure, outperforming many 6-1/2-inch or 8-inch bookshelf speakers or even small tower speakers. With a footprint of less than 67 square inches, the OPAL1 is able to achieve an average extension in the room to nearly 30 Hz. This means that these speakers can produce room-filling bass in many applications without the need for a separate subwoofer. With an RMS power handling capacity of 200 watts, they can achieve an output power beyond that of most bookshelf speakers of this size.

The OPAL1 cabinets may be small, but they are rock solid. By using ¾-inch MDF and internally reinforced construction, the cabinets don't color the sound with their own vibrations. The calculated addition of damping material inside also helps to reduce standing waves that can cause unwanted resonance.
The attention to detail continues: the inner edges of the grilles have been heavily beveled to reduce diffraction during use. The grilles are securely fastened with hidden magnets so that the OPAL1 has a clean, uniform appearance once the grilles have been removed.
