The midrange driver is a central element in many audio systems. We are most familiar with the mid frequencies, and we immediately recognize poor sound reproduction here. Above all, the reproduction of the human voice takes place in the frequency range of the midrange driver. It is therefore essential to pay particular attention to the mid-range drivers. Is a midrange driver even necessary?

This is a controversial question on which opinions differ widely. Basically, it is important to cover all frequency ranges of the human hearing spectrum from approx. 20 to 20,000 Hz. The simplest subdivision is into lows, mids and highs, although no precise limits are defined. It is therefore obvious that separate loudspeakers take over the individual ranges and are specially designed for them. This is realized by a 3-way system that contains a woofer, midrange driver and tweeter. However, 2-way systems also have a large following. In these systems, the woofer and mid-range driver are combined in one speaker - the mid-woofer. In a 2-way system, there is usually no room for the classic midrange driver. Is the 3-way system better than the 2-way system due to the separate components? There is no clear answer to this question. A well-coordinated 2-way system will undoubtedly deliver better sound than a randomly combined 3-way system. There are also cost and space savings with two instead of three components. As is so often the case, the optimum sound system depends on the individual case.

Excursus on transducers

The transducer is the part of the loudspeaker that reproduces the sound from the source. If you browse through our models, you will mainly find transducers in the form of a cone among the mid-range speakers. Although this design is predominant, it is not the only option. Spherical domes are also occasionally used in midrange speakers and even midrange horns exist. Without describing the details of the designs, you can remember the following rule of thumb: The cone is standard for midrange and woofers. The dome is the preferred design for tweeters. The horn is more exotic and less common nowadays. Although the cone is common for midrange drivers, you may well find that the sound of a dome midrange driver is better. Personal preference is not concerned with standards or preferred designs. Nevertheless, you shouldn't worry too much about the design. With an established cone midrange driver, you are on the safe side and have by far the widest choice.

Which specifications are important?

If you opt for the popular 3-way system with midrange driver, we have a large selection of different models from 2 to 6.5 inches. However, models with outer diameters of 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) are the most common. The versatility of the midrange drivers is also reflected in the cone materials used. While the latter BLAM speaker has a carbon cone, the Scanspeak speakers come with a paper or glass fiber cone (the technology is even patented). Other models also have aluminum cones.

Since the midrange driver is usually part of a 3-way system, a wide frequency range is not the decisive criterion. As the woofer and tweeter are used in parallel, overlaps will inevitably occur. As a result, the midrange drivers do not differ greatly from each other in terms of their frequency ranges. Other parameters are therefore more interesting, especially impedance and power. These values should be well matched to the entire system.
