Mid-bass speakers as all-rounders
Mid-bass drivers are a combination of
mid-range and bass drivers. On the one hand, they are capable of reproducing the important mid-range frequencies. Most of the sounds that we humans are familiar with from our everyday lives take place in these mid-range frequencies of approx. 150 to 2,000 Hz. They are well known to us and we notice
distortions here immediately. On the other hand, the bass-midrange driver can also reproduce the low frequencies, the bass. We distinguish between the low bass up to 40 Hz, the mid bass up to 100 Hz and the upper bass up to 150 Hz. The low bass and the lower ranges of the mid-bass are not the specialty of the bass-midrange driver. On the other hand, it is excellent at reproducing the so-called
kick bass, a rather "dry" bass at frequencies above 50 Hz.
Use depending on the system
As the bass-midrange driver can be used in many different ways, a distinction must be made in practice between two applications: Use in a 2-way system and use in a 3-way system. First of all, it cannot be said across the board that 3-way systems are always the better choice. Various factors play a role in the
optimum sound experience and it may well be that the 2-way system is the better choice for individual requirements. As the mid-woofer can cover a wide range of frequencies, it forms a 2-way system when combined with a tweeter. The mid-bass driver covers frequencies up to 2,500 Hz. Highs, mids and lows are covered, and a
subwoofer for the very deep basses could be added. In the 3-way system, the bass-midrange driver concentrates on the low frequencies down to approx. 300 Hz, so it actually functions as a woofer. The mid frequencies are handled by a separate midrange driver, while the tweeter and optional subwoofer remain unchanged.
The right model
Once it is clear how the new audio system should be set up in principle, the optimum mid-bass driver must be selected. Of course, personal preference is ultimately decisive. However, the
specifications of the individual models can provide a few pointers. Let's take a look at two of our popular top sellers: the
"BLACKDEATH BDPRO 6M-V9" and the
"APOCALYPSE AP-M61 SE". The former covers frequencies from 75 to 10,000 Hz, the latter 100 to 15,500 Hz. Both models can be recommended without reservation, are the same size and are close in price. If you are not planning to install a subwoofer but still want to experience maximum bass, the "BLACKDEATH" is probably your first choice. If the subwoofer is permanently installed, the "APOCALYPSE" might be more suitable. In case you are wondering why both mid-woofers also cover five-digit frequencies, while tweeters start at low four-digit frequencies: It is always important that the speakers used overlap in terms of their frequency ranges. This ensures that there are no frequency gaps.
Dimensions and other specifications
The wide frequency range of the woofers is also reflected in the different dimensions of the speakers. The small models have a diameter of 4 inches (20 cm), while the largest speakers have a diameter of 10 inches (38 cm). In addition to the diameter, the other dimensions, the weight and the frequencies, the
impedance should also not be neglected. This is usually 4 ohms, but can also be other values. It is important that the
amplifier and speaker have the same values.
Mid-bass drivers - Our professional tip:
The peak power is not very meaningful and only describes the maximum power that a woofer can deliver for a short time. The
RMS power, i.e. the average power, is much more important. Pay attention to this value, whereby most users will generally be satisfied with values from 120 watts RMS.
