Tweeter: ribbon, horn and dome

The tweeter takes care of the high frequencies up to over 20,000 Hz. Due to its design, it is quite small, which is perfectly adequate for high frequencies. The cheapest models start at low double-digit amounts, while premium models range up to 1,500 €. There are basically three types of tweeters. If a full 180 degree sound output is required, dome tweeters are the first choice. These are also the most popular type of tweeter today. If the sound is to be directed specifically in one direction and reproduced at a high level, horn tweeters are the choice. For the sake of completeness, the ribbon tweeters and AMT should also be mentioned, but these are more exotic among loudspeakers and are something for enthusiasts.

Midrange drivers: Indispensable for the 3-way system

Mid-range drivers play an important role in any sound system. People are familiar with the mid frequencies from their everyday lives and immediately recognize bad sounds in this range. The human voice in particular plays in these frequencies. Therefore, the midrange driver should not be skimped on. This is also why many sound fans integrate the midrange driver separately in a 3-way system, while in a 2-way system it is combined with the woofer as a combined bass-midrange driver. This is not necessarily a disadvantage: high-quality mid-bass drivers can do this job with ease and 2-way systems can be the optimal choice, depending on the individual application. Midrange drivers start at an outer diameter of 5 cm and go up to 20 cm.

Woofers: car speakers in all sizes

Strictly speaking, you rarely find pure woofers. The frequency range of a woofer would be very low at 50 to 300 Hz. In addition, it would be limited by the subwoofer and midrange driver, which are unbeatable experts in their special fields. For this reason, woofers are usually built as bass-midrange drivers and extend far into the frequencies of the midrange drivers up to 10,000 Hz or more. This naturally leads to overlaps, but this is intentional and sensible. Overlapping of the frequency ranges eliminates frequency gaps, which should be avoided at all costs. In a 2-way system, the bass-midrange driver handles the mid and low frequencies alone. In the 3-way system, on the other hand, it acts as a pure woofer, while the midrange driver covers the mid-range frequencies. As low frequencies require more space in the design of the car speakers, bass-midrange drivers only start at an outer diameter of 10 cm. The largest models reach up to 38 cm and are increasingly similar to subwoofers.
