The Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS v.3-6.5" (16.5cm) front system set is characterized by a specially developed bass-midrange driver. The bass-midrange driverfeatures a high-quality cast aluminum basket as a starting point, whereas many speakers in this category use cheaper stamped steel frames.
The cone is made of a high-quality carbon fiber fabric. The dust cap is also made of the same material as the cone. The surround is made of a very compliant rubber that helps to tame any remaining edge resonances within the cone. With all midrange drivers, the cone, surround and dust cap are crucial to the sound. After extensive testing, Sundown Audio has opted for exactly this combination for the v3 iteration of the SA component set.
The motor has been FEA optimized internally to increase linear excursion and offers a full 6mm of linear excursion in one direction thanks to a carefully designed motor and extended pole piece. We have also carefully considered thermal performance when developing the SA midrange driver with vented magnet gap and vented voice coil collar. The power rating of 60 watts per side for the SA midrange was derived from an 8-hour pink noise test (full bandwidth to 20 Hz) - so if you overdrive the low end, this figure is very conservative. Most customers use 100+ watt RMS amplifiers for the SA units.
The SA Series tweeter had to match the smooth sound of the midrange driver, so we opted for a silk dome tweeter. We tested numerous versions, optimized the gap, the material of the dome, tested different lenses, different chamber damping materials and so on until we arrived at the final design. As the frequency response diagram proves, the result is an incredibly smooth sounding tweeter. Don't let the plain cabinet fool you - we've all learned that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, and you'll find that this tweeter performs as well or better than many fancier counterparts. We've stuck to the Sundown mentality of not spending money if it doesn't enhance performance.
The crossover also looks relatively simple at first glance, but it does its job perfectly. It's a 24 dB network centered at 3800 Hz, with high-quality air-core coils and Mylar capacitors. It also has a built-in tweeter protection circuit to prevent premature failure due to clipping.
