Dimensions

SB17CRC35 / Carbon

The Carbon Rohacell® membrane of the SB17CRC35 offers an optimized ratio of stiffness and damping. This combination ensures excellent sound quality through reduced membrane distortion, which is particularly advantageous when used as a mid-bass driver. The ultra-lightweight construction allows for faster membrane movement, improving the transient response. Especially at high volumes, the sound remains clean, as the membrane operates stably and precisely. These characteristics make the driver ideal for use in 2-way systems or as a pure midrange driver. Additionally, the glossy surface enhances the aesthetic appearance, suitable for high-quality HiFi applications.
The extended copper sleeve on the pole shoe of the SB17CRC35 reduces the inductance of the voice coil, resulting in lower distortion and a clearer sound image. By improving the magnetic field linearity, it ensures stable conditions for the voice coil, especially at high volumes and complex musical passages. The efficiency of the driver is also increased by these construction elements, as mechanical losses are minimized. This improves the settling behavior and ensures an optimal frequency response. This design significantly contributes to the precise and distortion-free reproduction of even demanding musical pieces.
The SB17CRC35 is available in a 4 Ohm and an 8 Ohm variant, with differences in electrical properties and sensitivity. The 4 Ohm variant has a higher sensitivity of 90 dB compared to 87 dB for the 8 Ohm version. This means it sounds louder at the same voltage. The inductance of the voice coil is lower in the 4 Ohm version at 0.13 mH compared to 0.15 mH in the 8 Ohm, allowing for a slight advantage in transient response. The electrical damping also differs, affecting adaptability to different types of amplifiers. Both variants offer excellent sound quality, but the choice depends on the specific requirements of the system.
The assembly of the SB17CRC35 is technically demanding, as the dimensions must be considered precisely. The back should be adequately ventilated, as the ventilated aluminum die-cast chassis requires space for rear sound radiation. Therefore, the chassis opening must fit precisely to the 6.5" (16.5 cm) driver to ensure a secure fit without cabinet resonances. It should also be ensured that the installation depth does not interfere with the chassis. A symmetrical and damped installation increases sound fidelity and ensures a harmonious interaction in the frequency range of 70Hz to 4kHz. Additional rubber dampers can help minimize mechanical vibrations.
The Thiele Small parameters of the SB17CRC35 are essential for tuning in loudspeaker systems. The effective diaphragm area Sd is 118 cm², which affects bass dispersion. The mechanical Q factor Qms of 4.32/3.90 for 4/8 Ohm indicates the mechanical losses, while the electrical Q factor Qes at 0.35/0.37 describes the electrical damping. The total Q factor Qts shows with 0.32/0.34 how the driver influences bass reproduction in a closed or open enclosure. The free air resonance Fs is at 31.5/28 Hz and affects bass depth. These parameters help to optimally integrate the driver into a loudspeaker system, whether in a bass reflex or closed enclosure.
The ventilated pole shoe of the SB17CRC35 has a specific goal: to minimize compression effects and thus improve fidelity at high volumes. The ventilation promotes effective heat dissipation, allowing the driver to achieve a higher thermal load capacity. Heat generation can significantly affect sound quality, so the ventilation structure helps to regulate this. Additionally, the diaphragm travel is optimized, as the airflow behind the diaphragm remains unaltered. This design decision enhances performance efficiency and minimizes distortions that would otherwise be amplified at high power levels.
The CCAW voice coil carrier of the SB17CRC35, a combination of copper and aluminum, effectively reduces the moving mass of the diaphragm, allowing for faster settling and better impulse response. The lighter structure of the voice coil increases the sensitivity of the driver, especially in the critical midrange, improving the reproduction of details. Additionally, the CCAW carrier offers high thermal stability, ensuring reliability under continuous loads or high volumes. These characteristics contribute to the SB17CRC35's ability to play complex musical pieces accurately and without audible distortion.
With a rated power of 60 W according to IEC 268-5, the SB17CRC35 achieves high mechanical load capacity, which is important for long-lasting sound quality. This load capacity ensures that the driver maintains its tonality even at high sound pressures, minimizing the risk of distortion. The mechanical loss of 0.65/0.6 kg/s ensures that the loss energy is efficiently dissipated, thereby improving the overall performance of the speaker system. When used in a 2-way speaker arrangement, this load capacity helps to ensure a full and resonance-free sound image, even with highly varying musical pieces.
The SB17CRC35 is a 6.5 inch (16.5 cm) midrange driver and requires suitable installation dimensions in speaker enclosures. The effective diaphragm area is 118 cm², which allows for ideal integration into medium to large speaker enclosure systems. Especially during installation, attention must be paid to rear ventilation, as a well-ventilated chassis increases mechanical efficiency. The voice coil height of 16 mm and the linear coil excursion of 11 mm provide enough headroom for defined bass reproduction, while the magnetic flux density of 1.0 T ensures constant force transmission. The exact arrangement also plays a role in fully exploiting the driver's potential.
The SB17CRC35 is primarily designed for HiFi applications and is less tailored for specific car brands. However, the 6.5-inch driver with its 16.5 cm diameter can be used in various vehicle models that offer space for speakers of this size. It is particularly suitable for larger vehicles or models with specified 6.5-inch speaker cutouts. However, the installation requires appropriate mounting tools and enclosure modifications to fully exploit the potential of the technical specifications. A prior check in the vehicle manual can be crucial to avoid complications and ensure seamless integration.
