In early 2005, the first generation of the Z-Motor was launched. It forever changed the way people thought about a high-performance subwoofer and pushed the boundaries of car audio to new extremes. Over the years, many versions of the Z-Motor have been produced, and this spirit of experimentation has driven DD to constant improvement and innovation.

The Z3 series features an impressive open neodymium motor with 13 lenses of quality class N48, just like its bigger brothers from the Z4 series. The steel motor parts from the USA are processed in DD Audio's hometown OKC, and all moving parts are made in the USA from the best available materials and manufacturing methods. The current Z's have several constructive improvements over previous models. DD was able to overcome the structural saturation values and increase the peak and total flow levels by allowing more energy to flow through our magnet lens architecture via more efficient flow paths, a tighter alignment of the lenses, and converging flow lines.

The free-flow cooling system was improved by the installation of longitudinal pole valves to increase the airflow to the coil body. Then, DD increased the thermal mass and applied heat-absorbing coatings in the target areas to support long-term heat dissipation. Additionally, DD made geometric changes that allow for increased maximum deflection and a greater variety of system configurations.

The striking appearance of the Z is characterized by a black oxide layer combined with red anodized accents. The engines are also adorned with custom CNC-engraved designs, and each engine is engraved with its production number, making each part unique.

You will find that the standard TS parameters for the Z series are missing. This omission is intentional, as each Z is made to order, allowing for zillions of possible parameter sets, making a static set of specifications very prone to inaccuracies. The subwoofers of the Z series are also equipped with the Evolution Subwoofer Package (ESP). The drivers equipped with ESP feature larger diameter suspensions and deeper frames than the standard subwoofers, as well as exclusive surround and cone designs. ESP subwoofers are truly built to maximize performance in their respective size class.

The Z series comes standard with an oversized dust cap made of black composite material in drywall construction, a red logo, and a treated pulp membrane, but can optionally be equipped with a custom suspension configuration, alternative composite dust caps, composite membranes, powder-coated frames, and a variety of logo options to give your subwoofer a unique appearance and/or additional performance for a specific application.

Features ESP Subwoofer

  • Carbon Fiber Blend Cone (CFB) - The CFB composition uses an effective carbon fiber-based cocktail to provide you with the highest strength-to-weight ratio in the industry.
  • Vario-Density Extended Range of Motion Surround (V-ROM) - Offers ultimate linear control at high deflection while enabling dynamically sounding bass reproduction. The control ribs are compressed to a lower density than the main surround body to allow for a stepless control system. The harder you control it, the more control you gain.
  • Tuned Spider System (TSS) - Each suspension is tuned to specific performance characteristics, e.g. High Definition, Power Handling, X-Stiff Control.
  • Super-Frame (SFrame) - Maximizes the spider diameter, the cone diameter, the suspension deflection, and thus acts as a secondary short-circuit ring and provides additional heat dissipation for better heat flow from the coil.
The Power Tuned Z312 ESP from DD Audio has an RMS power handling of 4000 watts and a peak power handling of 8000 watts. These specifications make the subwoofer an ideal choice for high-fidelity car audio applications. The subwoofer is equipped with a lossless linear suspension and a 3.35" (8.50 mm) voice coil diameter, allowing it to deliver high performance with minimal distortion. This makes the Z312 ESP particularly suitable for users seeking powerful bass reproduction with clearly defined sounds.
The Power Tuned Z312 ESP from DD Audio utilizes a patented neodymium magnet system. This system is based on a magnetic lens architecture consisting of 13 lenses of grade N48, which allows for exceptional magnetic flux densities. The tight flux lines and converging flux paths maximize energy transfer, resulting in higher structural saturation. This is complemented by a black oxide layer and red anodized accents, which optimize both the performance and aesthetic appeal of the subwoofer.
The design of the Power Tuned Z312 ESP includes numerous optimizations. Special attention is given to the geometric construction, which allows for maximum deflection. The free-flow cooling system, reinforced by longitudinal pole vents, enhances air circulation around the coil body. Coatings with heat-absorbing properties support long-term cooling and increase thermal mass. The stunning optical design with a black oxide layer and red anodized accents also gives the subwoofer a unique aesthetic.
The standard TS parameters are deliberately omitted in the Power Tuned Z312 ESP, as each subwoofer is custom-made, allowing for an infinite range of parameters. This specific customizability enables an unparalleled sound adjustment to individual requirements. The ESP integration includes larger suspensions and deeper frames, making it impossible to set static parameters without compromising the potential for customization. Thus, each subwoofer receives a tailored sound signature, optimal for the most demanding applications.
The Power Tuned Z312 ESP subwoofer is offered with various impedance options. There are configurations with dual 1 ohm, dual 2 ohm, dual 0.5 ohm, and dual 1.5 ohm. This variety of impedance options allows the subwoofer to be combined with a wide range of amplifiers and provides flexible installation in different audio systems. This adaptability is ideal for users looking for specific matching requirements for their car Hi-Fi setups.
The Tuned Spider System (TSS) in the Power Tuned Z312 ESP is specifically tuned to optimize the performance of the subwoofer. It ensures improved handling of power and controls the excursion with high precision. The system is capable of maintaining high-definition sound and power consumption, which is particularly advantageous when high excursions are required. Its tuning also allows for consistent control across different usage types, ensuring a consistent and dynamic bass experience.
The Vario-Density Extended Range of Motion Surround (V-ROM) of the Power Tuned Z312 ESP offers precise control of deflection at high movement and linear control. It ensures that the control ribs are at a lower density than the main body of the surround, providing a stepless control system. Even at very aggressive settings, the system maintains its ability for linear control, thus ensuring powerful, dynamic bass that meets the highest audio demands.
The cone of the Power Tuned Z312 ESP is made from a Carbon Fiber Blend (CFB), known for its exceptionally high strength-to-weight ratio. This material choice allows for increased stability and resonance control while minimizing weight. The balanced interplay of these material properties contributes to the stunning performance and sound precision of the subwoofer. CFB not only provides a more robust structure but also helps refine the sound and make the bass reproduction even more intense.
The Power Tuned Z312 ESP offers a variety of customization options to meet specific requirements. In addition to choosing between different impedances, users can select optional features such as custom dust caps, alternative dust cap materials, composite membranes, and powder-coated frames. The customizable logo options provide another way for individual design. This selection of components and design aspects ensures that the subwoofer is perfectly tailored to the desired application and aesthetic preference.
The free-flow cooling system of the Power Tuned Z312 ESP is designed to significantly improve cooling efficiency. By integrating longitudinal pole vents, the airflow around the coil body is increased, optimizing heat dissipation. This is complemented by heat-absorbing coatings that promote sustainable heat dissipation. This thermal optimization ensures that the subwoofer remains powerful even during intense use over extended periods, without overheating or performance loss.
