Remarkably powerful motor with low distortion
- The RSS265HE-22 requires an incredibly powerful motor to maintain precise control over the cone even at high excursion. A stack of three high-energy Y-35 ferrite magnets provides the necessary power while leaving enough clearance for the voice coil to move without touching the backplate. A copper ring and thick aluminum sleeve help minimize stored energy and reduce inductance as the coil passes through the motor. Thanks to this massive motor assembly, the RSS265HE-22 is able to produce extremely low distortion and precise response, even when driven to the limits of its 50 mm peak level.
Amazing load capacity with low power compression
- The cone is driven by a large 3" diameter voice coil wound on a thick aluminum former that can dissipate enough heat to handle up to 800 watts RMS. A helical gap in the voice coil former minimizes the eddy currents induced in each conducting coil former to further reduce inductance and distortion. Ventilation through the voice coil former and pole piece provides adequate airflow across the coil while minimizing turbulence to enable quiet operation at high excursion. In addition, the copper ring and aluminum sleeve improve heat transfer to the pole piece and magnet assembly, dissipating heat from the coil more efficiently. All of this gives the RSS265HE-22 the ability to reliably handle tons of power without significant power compression, even when pushed hard for extended periods of time.
Optimized suspension for maximum linear stroke
- To accommodate the 25 mm Xmax, the RSS265HE-22 required a flexible suspension that allows linear movement to keep the voice coil centered even when driven beyond its excursion limits. A custom high-roll surround provides a consistent surface area and allows for incredible excursion without cramping or deforming. Two progressive spiders with integrated tinsel cable support the cone and voice coil. The spiders are optimized to restrict movement once the driver reaches Xmax to prevent catastrophic damage from excessive dynamic peaks. In addition, the spiders have plenty of space between them to center the coil in the narrow magnetic gap. Every aspect of the RSS265HE-22's suspension has been designed to reliably allow extreme excursion without causing significant distortion.
Aluminum cone and dust cap... a tradition of the Reference series
- To visually match the other subwoofers in the popular Reference Series, the RSS265HE-22 uses a rigid, anodized aluminum cone and dust cap. The cone is significantly thicker to withstand the force exerted by such a powerful motor and to increase mass for low Fs. Thanks to the rigidity and natural damping properties of aluminum, any breakup of the cone is pushed well out of the passband, giving the RSS265HE-22 an exceptionally flat frequency response, even in the mid-bass and lower midrange. In addition, aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat, turning the entire cone and dust cap into a large heat sink that effectively dissipates heat away from the voice coil, further controlling power compression.
Incredible flexibility for powerful bass in any system
- The technical specifications of the RSS265HE-22 have been tuned so that it can be used in a variety of situations. The extended low frequency extension makes it ideal for use as a subwoofer in home audio and theater systems. As the RSS265HE-22 only requires an extremely small cabinet, it is also an excellent choice for use in high output car audio systems. In addition, the two 2-ohm voice coils enable stereo 2-ohm or mono 1-ohm wiring configurations when connecting to high-current amplifiers in car audio and professional audio to achieve maximum performance. For home audio applications, the voice coils can easily be wired in series to achieve a standard 4-ohm load and increase compatibility with amplifiers. All Reference Series HE drivers are designed to deliver amazing low frequency response with incredible power, punch and detail.
