Remarkably powerful motor with low distortion
- In order for the RSS265HE-22 to maintain precise control over the diaphragm even at high excursions, it requires an incredibly powerful motor. A stack of three high-energy Y-35 ferrite magnets provides the necessary force while allowing enough clearance for the voice coil to move without touching the back plate. A copper ring and a thick aluminum sleeve help minimize stored energy and reduce inductance when the coil is driven by the motor. Thanks to this massive motor assembly, the RSS265HE-22 is capable of producing extremely low distortion and precise response characteristics, even when operated at the limits of its 50 mm peak level.
Amazing resilience at low performance compression
- The diaphragm is driven by a large voice coil with a diameter of 3" that is wound around a thick aluminum beam and can dissipate enough heat to handle up to 800 watts RMS. A spiral gap in the coil body minimizes the eddy currents induced in any conductive coil body, further reducing inductance and distortion. Ventilation through the voice coil carrier and the pole piece ensures adequate airflow over the coil while minimizing turbulence to allow for quiet operation at high excursions. Additionally, the copper ring and aluminum sleeve improve heat transfer to the pole piece and magnet assembly, allowing heat to be dissipated more efficiently from the coil. All of this gives the RSS265HE-22 the ability to reliably handle tons of power without significant performance compression, even when pushed hard for extended periods.
Optimized suspension for maximum linear lift
- To accommodate the 25 mm Xmax, the RSS265HE-22 required a flexible suspension that allows for linear movement to keep the voice coil centered even when operated beyond the limits of excursion. A specially manufactured high-roll surround ensures a consistent surface and enables incredible travel without cramping or deforming. Two progressive spider designs with integrated glitter cable support the diaphragm and the voice coil. The spiders are optimized to restrict movement once the driver reaches Xmax, preventing catastrophic damage from excessive dynamic peaks. Additionally, the spiders have plenty of space between them to center the coil in the tight magnetic gap. Every aspect of the suspension of the RSS265HE-22 has been designed to reliably allow extreme excursions without significant distortion.
Aluminum membrane and dust protection cap... a tradition of the Reference series
- To visually match the other subwoofers in the popular Reference series, the RSS265HE-22 uses a rigid, anodized aluminum diaphragm and a dust cap. The diaphragm is significantly thicker to withstand the force exerted by such a powerful motor and to increase the mass for a low Fs. Thanks to the stiffness and natural damping properties of aluminum, any breakup of the diaphragm is pushed far out of the passband, giving the RSS265HE-22 an exceptionally flat frequency response, even in the mid-bass and lower midrange. Furthermore, aluminum is an excellent heat conductor, transforming the entire diaphragm and dust cap into a large heatsink that effectively dissipates heat away from the voice coil, further controlling performance compression.
Incredible flexibility for powerful bass in any system
- The technical specifications of the RSS265HE-22 have been tuned to allow it to be used in a variety of situations. With the extended low-frequency extension, it is ideal for use as a subwoofer in home audio and theater systems. Since the RSS265HE-22 requires only an extremely small enclosure, it is also an excellent choice for use in high-output car audio systems. Additionally, the two 2-ohm voice coils allow for stereo 2-ohm or mono 1-ohm wiring configurations when connected to high-current amplifiers in the car audio and professional audio fields to achieve maximum power. For home audio applications, the voice coils can easily be wired in series to achieve a common 4-ohm load and increase compatibility with amplifiers. All HE drivers in the Reference series are designed to provide amazing low-frequency reproduction with incredible power, punch, and detail.
