The Dayton Audio MX12-22 Max-X 12" dual voice coil subwoofer is designed to deliver maximum performance at an unbeatable price. It has all the features and performance you'd expect from a premium subwoofer without the high price tag. The MX12-22 offers high bass output with remarkably low distortion and is designed for use in compact enclosures, making it suitable for both home and car audio systems. With 37.8 mm peak excursion (Klippel tested at 70% Bl), this speaker can move large amounts of air.
It's about more than just looks
- Many inexpensive subwoofers may look powerful, but they do not offer high performance.
- In developing the MX12-22, Dayton Audio has spared no effort to keep costs down without compromising on performance or reliability. A large, inverted dust cap completely covers the rigid cellulose paper cone, creating an extremely rigid, layered cone with a sleek and modern look. The narrow but tall custom surround has been optimized to allow high excursion without reducing the cone area to ensure maximum excursion with improved efficiency. In addition, the surround extends to the rear of the mounting flange, providing a maximum adhesion surface that can easily withstand the stresses of high excursion. To keep the cone linear, the MX12-22 uses two spiders widely spaced so that it does not wobble even when pushed to its limits.
Extensive ventilation openings keep everything cool
- Subwoofers with high output power can generate a lot of heat. Excessive heat causes the temperature to rise, which in turn increases the resistance. This leads to lower performance, power compression and premature failure.
- The MX12-22 has everything needed to direct as much air as possible through the 2-1/2" voice coil to dissipate excess heat. Six large diameter openings in the cone combined with a widened pole piece opening provide a continuous flow of air directly through the center of the voice coil. The outside of the coil is cooled by eight vents under the spider in the frame and six peripheral vents in the backplate. This airflow not only ensures that power compression is kept to a minimum, but also that the MX12-22 operates extremely quietly even at high excursions, virtually eliminating the mechanical noise associated with many of today's subwoofer drivers.
A powerful motor for incredible flexibility
- Another problem with many subwoofer drivers in today's price range is the lack of motor power. As a result, the drivers are inefficient or can only produce a "one note bass", which is the result of high Q drivers.
- The massive, double-stacked high-energy ferrite magnets have been optimized to drive the 2-1/2" voice coil efficiently and precisely. The magnet gap has also been kept narrow to ensure the lowest possible loss of magnetic force. This powerful motor unit gives the MX12-22 an impressive Bl value of 21.5 T/m with a Qts value of 0.35, making it suitable for use in compact sealed or vented enclosures with excellent bass extension.
- With its two 2-ohm voice coils, the MX12-22 can be used in a number of configurations to get the maximum performance out of your amplifier in almost any application. In most home theater systems, the coils are wired in series to produce a 4-ohm load. When used in automotive audio systems, you have the option of running the coils individually to create a dual 2-ohm load, or paralleling them to 1 ohm to get the maximum power out of today's high-current amplifiers.
Maximum ratio of value and performance
- Thanks to extensive optimizations and advanced design, the Dayton Audio MX12-22 is an affordable, powerful subwoofer that delivers incredible power output and low distortion in a compact size. The Max-X speakers are the perfect choice for building a powerful home stereo system, a high SPL mobile audio system or a great sounding car audio system without breaking the bank.
