It's about more than just looks

  • Many budget subwoofers may look powerful but don’t deliver high performance.
  • In developing the MX12-22, Dayton Audio spared no effort to keep costs low without compromising performance or reliability. A large inverted dust cap fully covers the rigid pulp paper cone, creating an extremely stiff, layered diaphragm with a sleek and modern look. The narrow but tall, custom surround is optimized to allow high excursion without reducing cone area, ensuring maximum excursion with improved efficiency. Additionally, the surround extends to the back of the mounting flange, providing maximum adhesion area that easily withstands the stresses of large excursion. To keep the cone linear, the MX12-22 uses two widely spaced spiders so it doesn’t wobble even at its limits.

Extensive ventilation keeps everything cool

  • High-output subwoofers can generate a lot of heat. Excessive heat raises temperature, which in turn increases resistance. This leads to reduced performance, power compression, and premature failure.
  • The MX12-22 has everything needed to channel as much air as possible through the 2-1/2" voice coil to dissipate this excess heat. Six large-diameter openings in the cone combined with a widened pole shoe opening provide continuous airflow directly through the center of the voice coil. The outside of the coil is cooled by eight openings under the spider in the frame and six peripheral slot openings in the backplate. This airflow not only minimizes power compression but also ensures the MX12-22 operates extremely quietly even at high excursions, practically eliminating the mechanical noises common in many modern subwoofer drivers.

A powerful motor for incredible flexibility

  • Another issue with many subwoofer drivers in this price range is insufficient motor strength. As a result, drivers are inefficient or can only produce a "one-note bass," which is typical of high-Q drivers.
  • The massive, dual-stacked high-energy ferrite magnets are optimized to drive the 2-1/2" voice coil efficiently and precisely. The magnet gap is kept narrow to ensure minimal loss of magnetic force. This powerful motor assembly gives the MX12-22 an impressive Bl rating of 21.5 T/m with a Qts of 0.35, making it suitable for use in compact sealed or vented enclosures with excellent bass extension.
  • With its two 2-ohm voice coils, the MX12-22 can be used in a variety of configurations so you can get maximum power from your amplifier in almost any application. In most home theater systems, the coils are wired in series to create a 4-ohm load. In car audio systems, you have the option to run the coils separately for a dual 2-ohm load or wire them in parallel to 1 ohm to get maximum power from today’s high-current amplifiers.

Maximum value-to-performance ratio

  • Thanks to extensive optimizations and advanced design, the Dayton Audio MX12-22 is an affordable, powerful subwoofer that offers incredible output and low distortion in a compact size. The Max-X speakers are the perfect choice to build a powerful home stereo system, a mobile audio system with high sound pressure levels, or a high-quality car audio system without breaking the bank.
