UMIK-1 by miniDSP

The miniDSP UMIK-1 (latest version 2!) is an omnidirectional calibrated USB-C measurement microphone (electret condenser microphone) and an absolute all-rounder.

The measurement microphone already has an integrated sound card and therefore only needs to be connected to the PC via USB-C, operating completely independently, ensuring that no measurement inaccuracies arise from the PC sound card.

HighLights

  • Simple USB-C to USB-A connection with the PC
  • Driverless support for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux
  • Compatible with all measurement software solutions
  • Flat frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz (+/- 1 dB)
  • "Plug&Play use with DIRAC and REW (Room Equalization Wizard) - free measurement program available!"

Product details
The UMIK-1 is a plug & play measurement microphone developed by miniDSP. The UMIK-1 is perfect for capturing frequency response data, designing speakers, measuring room modes / room correction, or for car audio and home theater calibration, as well as for many other acoustic measurement applications. The miniDSP UMIK-1 is recommended by Dirac Live and REW. The microphone is powered via USB-C and features a 24-bit ADC. This means that no preamplifier or sound card is required. Thanks to the USB Audio Class 1 interface, all common operating systems and acoustic measurement software are supported without drivers. Each microphone comes with an individual calibration file that ensures a flat frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz.

Frequently Asked Questions about UMIK-1

What are the main features of the UMIK-1?

The UMIK-1 from miniDSP is an omnidirectional electret condenser microphone specifically optimized for acoustic measurements. Thanks to its integrated sound card, you avoid measurement inaccuracies that could arise from external sound cards. The UMIK-1 offers a wide range of applications and is driverless compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz with an accuracy of +/- 1 dB allows for precise measurements in various acoustic environments. This is complemented by plug-and-play use with software solutions like DIRAC and REW, making it ideal for home theater and car audio calibrations.

How is the UMIK-1 microphone constructed?

The UMIK-1 features a robust aluminum die-cast microphone body that protects the 6 mm electret condenser microphone. The omnidirectional polar pattern allows for uniform sound capture from all directions – ideal for frequency response measurements and room corrections. With its 24-bit ADC and a sampling rate of up to 48 kHz, the microphone provides accurate and high-resolution data for your acoustic analyses. Additionally, the set includes a shielded 2.0-meter long USB-C to USB-A cable, a mini tripod, and a foam windscreen, which facilitate handling and placement in any environment.

What frequency range does the UMIK-1 operate in?

The UMIK-1 covers a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz and offers excellent linearity with only +/- 1 dB deviation after loaded calibration. This impressive range makes it well-suited for various acoustic measurement applications, from speaker construction to room acoustic optimization. The individualized calibration file that you can download with the serial number ensures that every measurement taken by the microphone occurs at a highly precise level. This is particularly valuable in applications that require accurate reproduction of audio frequencies.

How is the UMIK-1 powered?

The UMIK-1 is powered via a USB-C cable with a voltage of 5 V. This interface not only provides power but also facilitates data transfer. A blue LED on the microphone indicates when the device is actively powered, which provides good feedback for the user. The concept of USB Audio Class 1 is supported, so no additional drivers are required for use on Windows, Mac, or Linux – a crucial advantage for users who value system compatibility and easy setup.

What is the maximum sound pressure the UMIK-1 can handle?

The UMIK-1 from miniDSP is designed to handle high sound pressures without distortion. It can process sound pressures up to 133 dB SPL at 1 kHz with a gain setting of 0 dB and only 1% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion). This is important for precise measurements in loud environments or during the calibration of audio systems, as it expands the dynamic range and comes closer to real operating conditions. Such high tolerance to sound pressure makes it particularly versatile for various sound tests and acoustic measurements.

What compatibility does the UMIK-1 offer with software solutions?

The UMIK-1 is compatible with all common measurement software solutions, including DIRAC and Room Equalization Wizard (REW), both of which allow for plug-and-play setup. This compatibility significantly simplifies acoustic measurement, as no additional configurations or driver installations are needed. Particularly useful is the ability to work with Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows systems – ideal when you switch between different devices and applications. The flexibility in choosing and using software makes it a versatile tool for acoustic audits and sound adjustments.

How do I download the calibration file for my UMIK-1?

To download the calibration file for your UMIK-1, you will need the serial number of your microphone. You can obtain this file by inserting the number into the download link: http://www.minidsp.com/images/umik/70xxxxx.txt (where 'xxxxx' is replaced by the serial number). This file, specifically tailored for each microphone, ensures that your device performs measurements accurately and reliably by accounting for frequency and amplitude drifts that may occur during the microphone's construction. This measure is particularly valuable for ensuring accurate and consistent measurement results.

Is the UMIK-1 also compatible with car audio systems?

Yes, the UMIK-1 is compatible with car audio systems. Its omnidirectional nature and frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz allow you to accurately analyze the acoustic properties of a vehicle's interior. Thanks to its USB-C interface, setup is incredibly easy, and you don't need any additional equipment like preamps or external sound cards. This makes it an ideal companion for tuning and optimizing car audio systems, achieving a detailed adjustment of the frequency response to specific vehicle acoustics.

What accessories come with the UMIK-1?

When you purchase the UMIK-1, you receive a comprehensive accessory package that allows you to get started right away. The package includes a shielded USB-C to USB-A cable (2.0 meters) for reliable data transfer and power supply. Additionally, a mini tripod is included to ensure stable positioning of the microphone in any environment. A foam windscreen is also part of the set to minimize unwanted background noise. Also convenient: a transport case that securely stores all components and enhances the microphone's portability.

How accurate is the calibration of the UMIK-1?

The accuracy of the UMIK-1's calibration is impressive. Each microphone comes with an individual calibration file linked to its specific serial number. This file takes into account the frequency response from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and ensures that the measurements exhibit extremely high precision by adjusting deviations in frequency and amplitude. This guarantees that the acoustic data recorded under different environmental conditions is accurate and consistent. This precision is particularly important for professional applications where the highest measurement accuracy is required.
