X12 v3 by Sundown Audio

The Sundown Audio X12 v3 from the Xv3 series is the first subwoofer model to use Sundown Audio's "Ultra-High Excursion" suspension and frame designs. The 10, 12, 15, and 18 inch models are equipped with specially manufactured and patented frames that allow for a massive centering spider.

With the Sundown Audio X12 v3, Sundown Audio introduces a new platform featuring a huge, triple-stacked motor structure with a 250 mm diameter, enabling an extreme X-Mech of over 100 mm. This motor drives a 4-layer CCAW coil with a 3″ diameter, wound on a thick aluminum coil former, delivering incredible excursion. In the v3 version, the coil has been upgraded to a new "black coil design" that dissipates significantly more heat than the coil from the X v2 series.

The subwoofers of the Xv3 series are designed for the lowest possible frequencies in the smallest possible enclosure, while maintaining extremely low distortion.

Improvements of the Xv3 Series compared to the Xv2 Series:

  • Power handling increased from 2000 watts RMS to 2500 watts RMS.
  • Higher XMAX of 30 mm linear each way
  • Larger magnet and significantly increased BL
  • New voice coil from the Zv5 series

Features

  • 12 inch (30 cm) subwoofer
  • Power handling: 2500 watts RMS
  • XMAX: 30 mm each way
  • Impedance: D1 or D2
  • New Mega-Roll v3 surround design
  • Black 3" voice coil
  • Massive ferrite magnet motor system

Frequently Asked Questions about X12 v3

What are the features of the Sundown Audio X12 v3 Subwoofer?

The Sundown Audio X12 v3 Subwoofer is notable for its 'Ultra-High Excursion' suspension and frame construction. These designs are specifically made for a massive centering spider, which, in conjunction with a triple-stacked motor system with a diameter of 250 mm, allows for extreme displacement of up to 100 mm. The subwoofer features a newly developed 3-inch voice coil that provides improved heat dissipation through a new 'black coil design' and is rated for a power handling of up to 2500 watts RMS with very low distortion, enhancing efficiency at extremely low frequencies.

What is the power handling of the X12 v3 Subwoofer?

The Sundown Audio X12 v3 Subwoofer has an increased power handling of an impressive 2500 watts RMS, representing a significant improvement over the previous version. This high power handling results from the robust triple motor structure and the 4-layer CCAW voice coil, which is wound on a thick aluminum coil body. The system is supported by a new Mega-Roll v3 surround design, which is ideally suited for modern audio systems that require maximum volume and sound fidelity with minimal distortion.

What coil technology is used in the Sundown Audio X12 v3?

The Sundown Audio X12 v3 utilizes an advanced 4-layer CCAW voice coil with a diameter of 3 inches, which is wound on a thick aluminum coil body. This design offers increased displacement and allows for excellent heat dissipation, further supported by the innovative 'black coil design.' The newly designed voice coil comes from the Zv5 series and is optimized to withstand extreme loads of up to 2500 watts RMS while maintaining sound quality at high volumes.

What are the magnetic properties of the X12 v3 Subwoofer?

The Sundown Audio X12 v3 features a massive ferrite magnet motor system that operates particularly effectively with low distortion and extremely low frequencies. It is equipped with a triple magnet structure that has a diameter of 250 mm. This massive construction supports the enormous X-Max excursion of 30 mm in each direction, making it especially suitable for applications where extreme power is required. In combination with the new coil technology, the magnet provides increased BL force, resulting in even stronger and more precise bass reproduction.

What innovations does the X12 v3 offer compared to the Xv2 series?

The Sundown Audio X12 v3 offers several technical improvements compared to the Xv2 series. This includes an increase in RMS power handling from 2000 to 2500 watts, representing a significant boost in performance. The X-Max has been increased to 30 mm linear in each direction, leading to greater excursion and enabling deeper bass frequencies. The motor system's magnet is larger and generates a significantly higher BL, which reduces distortion. Additionally, the voice coil has been redesigned, improving heat dissipation and thus the longevity of the Subwoofer.

Are Thiele-Small parameters available for the X12 v3?

Thiele-Small parameters are often used in the design of Subwoofers to achieve the best sound quality and efficiency. However, for the Sundown Audio X12 v3, there are no explicit Thiele-Small parameters provided in the available information. These parameters may vary individually depending on the enclosure and environment. If such data is needed, it is advisable to obtain it either directly from the manufacturer or through specific measurements with an appropriate Measuring Device under the intended operating conditions.

What impedance options does the X12 v3 Subwoofer offer?

The Sundown Audio X12 v3 is available in two impedance variants: D1 and D2. These different impedance values allow for flexible integration into existing audio systems, depending on whether a parallel or series connection is needed. The D1 variant allows for a lower final impedance, ideal for systems that prefer high currents and low resistance loads. The D2 variant offers more versatility in configuration across different systems. It is important to consider the compatibility of the impedance with the amplifier system to achieve full power and sound fidelity.

What should be considered when installing the X12 v3 Subwoofer?

When installing the Sundown Audio X12 v3 Subwoofer, the dimensions and structure of the enclosure are essential to ensure the full performance of the subwoofer. The subwoofer is optimized for small enclosures to produce the least distortion at low frequencies. The exact positioning within the vehicle or room should be harmonized with the acoustics of the space. Additionally, it should be ensured that there is enough space to allow for the large excursion of 100 mm, ensuring clean bass reproduction without limitations.

Which car brands is the Sundown Audio X12 v3 compatible with?

The compatibility of the Sundown Audio X12 v3 with car brands is mainly a matter of dimensions and available installation space. Since specific car brands are not mentioned in the provided information, the X12 v3 could be installed in vehicles that have enough space for its installation and ensure an adequate power supply for the required power consumption. Dimensions and the shape of the trunk or intended installation area should be checked to guarantee installation without space issues.

What characterizes the X-Mech feature of the X12 v3?

The X-Mech feature of the Sundown Audio X12 v3 represents the maximum mechanical excursion that can be achieved by the subwoofer. With just over 100 mm, this model offers an enormous excursion, making it ideal for reproducing extremely low bass frequencies. This technical feature is made possible by an innovative, triple-stacked motor structure and an extra-large centering spider, which, along with the Mega-Roll v3 surround, ensure exceptional control and linearity. Such specifications are important for applications that require high sound pressure levels without distortion.
