. Mid-woofer as all-rounder
Mid-woofers are a combination of
midrange speakers and woofers. On the one hand, they are able to reproduce the important midrange. In these middle frequencies of approx. 150 to 2,000 Hz, most of the sounds that we humans know from our everyday lives occur. They are well known to us and we notice
distortions here immediately. On the other hand, the woofer can also reproduce the low frequencies, the bass. We distinguish between the deep bass up to 40 Hz, the middle bass up to 100 Hz and the upper bass up to 150 Hz. The deep bass and the lower areas of the middle bass are not the specialty of the woofer. Instead, it can reproduce the so-called
kick bass , a rather “dry” bass at frequencies from 50 Hz, is excellently implemented.
Use depending on the system
Since the bass-midrange speaker can be used in a wide variety of ways, two applications must be distinguished in practice: use in a 2-way system and use in a 3-way system. One thing in advance: It cannot be said in general that 3-way systems are always the better choice. For the
optimal sound experience Various factors play a role and it may well be that the 2-way system is the better choice for individual requirements. Since the mid-woofer can cover a wide range of frequencies, it creates a 2-way system in combination with a tweeter. The woofer covers frequencies up to 2,500 Hz. Highs, mids and lows are covered, a
subwoofer for the very deep basses. In the 3-way system, the bass-midrange speaker concentrates on the lows up to approx. 300 Hz, so it actually functions as a woofer. The middle frequencies are handled by a separate midrange speaker, tweeter and optional subwoofer remain unchanged.

If the subwoofer is firmly planned, the "APOCALYPSE" might be more suitable. If you are wondering at this point why both mid-woofers also cover five-digit frequencies, while tweeters already start at low four-digit frequencies: It is always important that the speakers used overlap in terms of their frequency ranges. This ensures that there are no frequency gaps.
Dimensions and other specifications
The wide frequency spectrum of the bass-midrange speakers is also reflected in the different dimensions of the speakers. The small models have a diameter of 4 inches (20 cm), while the largest speakers have a diameter of 10 inches (38 cm). In addition to the diameter, the other dimensions, the weight and the frequencies, the
impedance should not be neglected. It is usually 4 ohms, but can also take other values. It is important that
amplifier and speakers have the same values.

The peak power is not very meaningful and only describes the maximum power that a bass/midrange speaker can deliver for a short time. Much more important is the
RMS power , i.e. the average power. Pay attention to this value, although most users will generally be happy with values ​​of 120 watts RMS or higher.
