The Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS v.3-6.5 inch front component set features a specially developed mid-bass driver. The mid-bass driver is built on a high-quality cast aluminum basket, while many speakers in this category use cheaper stamped steel frames.

The cone is made from high-quality carbon fiber fabric. The dust cap is also made from the same material as the diaphragm. The surround is made from a very compliant rubber, which helps to tame any remaining edge resonances within the diaphragm. For all midrange drivers, the diaphragm, surround, and dust cap are crucial for sound quality. After extensive testing, Sundown Audio chose exactly this combination for the v3 iteration of the SA component set.

The motor was internally FEA-optimized to increase linear excursion and offers a full 6 mm linear excursion in one direction thanks to a carefully designed motor and an extended pole piece. In developing the SA midrange driver with a vented magnet gap and vented voice coil collar, we also carefully considered thermal performance. The power rating of 60 watts per side for the SA midrange driver was derived from an 8-hour pink noise test (full bandwidth down to 20 Hz) – so if you push the lower range, this number is very conservative. Most customers use RMS amplifiers with 100+ watts for the SA devices.

The tweeter of the SA series had to match the smooth sound of the midrange driver, so we chose a silk dome. We tested numerous versions, optimized the gap, dome material, tested different lenses, various chamber damping materials, and so on until we arrived at the final design. As the frequency response graph proves, the result is an incredibly smooth-sounding tweeter. Don’t be fooled by the simple housing – we’ve all learned not to judge a book by its cover, and you’ll find this tweeter performs as well as or better than many fancier counterparts. We stuck to the Sundown mentality of not spending money unless it improves performance.

The crossover also looks relatively simple at first glance, but it perfectly fulfills its task. It is a 24 dB network centered at 3800 Hz, with high-quality air coils and Mylar capacitors. It also features a built-in tweeter protection circuit to prevent premature failure due to clipping.

Frequently Asked Questions about SA-6.5CS v.3

What is the main material of the mid-bass driver of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS?

The mid-bass driver of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS is made from a high-quality aluminum die-cast basket. Unlike many comparable speaker systems that use stamped steel frames, Sundown Audio also utilizes a cone made of carbon fiber composite. This choice of material provides both stability and lightness, resulting in an improved sound profile. It is also worth mentioning the use of the same carbon fiber for the dust cap, which allows for consistent acoustic resonance. The rubber surround further helps to effectively control all edge resonances, making the mid-bass driver ideal for high-quality audio applications.

Which Thiele-Small parameters are important for the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS?

When considering the Thiele-Small parameters for the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS, the linear displacements are particularly significant. The internally FEA-optimized motor of the midrange driver allows for a full 6 mm linear displacement in one direction. These parameters are crucial for the precise reproduction of low frequencies without distortion. Since the component comes from a pink noise test at a measured power of 60 watts per side, thermal capacity is also an important factor. The optimally designed ventilation of the magnetic gap and the voice coil collar ensures excellent thermal conductivity properties.

What are the features of the tweeter of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS?

The tweeter of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS is a silk dome designed specifically to ensure a smooth sound that perfectly harmonizes with the midrange driver. The aluminum enclosure construction supports mechanical stability and contributes to clean high-frequency performance. To accommodate various sound preferences, the tweeter level is adjustable with options at -3 dB, 0 dB, and +3 dB. Through a sophisticated crossover design that uses a 24 dB/octave network centered at 3800 Hz, a seamless crossover frequency is achieved, which is attractive to audiophiles.

How does the crossover work in the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS?

The Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS uses a 24 dB/octave Crossover centered at 3800 Hz. This crossover is equipped with high-quality air coils and Mylar capacitors to ensure a clear separation of frequencies between the low, mid, and high ranges. Notably, the built-in Tweeter protection circuit offers protection against clipping by efficiently filtering out overloads. This combination of high-quality components and thoughtful design delivers precise audio performance and significantly extends the lifespan of the speaker system. The choice of components provides a balanced mix of reliability and acoustic precision.

What power and impedance does the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS system have?

The Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS system is designed to achieve a power of 250 watts RMS at a nominal impedance of 4 Ohm. These technical parameters are crucial for selecting the appropriate amplifier. The power value of 60 watts per side achieved in the 8-hour test with pink noise underscores the system's robust durability. When higher demands are placed, such as with RMS amplifiers over 100 watts, the SA-6.5CS still remains within its specifications. This allows for great flexibility in various audio setups.

What are the installation dimensions of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS?

For the installation of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS, precise knowledge of the installation dimensions is essential. The installation depth is 7.1 cm, while the cutout requires a diameter of 14.2 cm. These measurements ensure that the system fits into the designated speaker openings. If the existing enclosure does not match these dimensions, adjustments are necessary. It is advisable to check vehicle compatibility based on manufacturer-specific information to ensure correct and lossless installation without compromising sound quality.

What thermal properties does the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS offer?

The thermal properties of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS are excellent due to the special design of the ventilated magnet gap and the ventilated voice coil collar. These features allow for effective heat dissipation and prevent thermal overloads during intense audio applications. This is particularly important when operating with RMS amplifiers over 100 watts. The motor of the midrange driver has been FEA-optimized for a linear excursion of up to 6 mm in one direction, which also positively contributes to heat dissipation. The design features ensure that the system remains reliable even under high loads.

How is the sound quality ensured in the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS?

The sound quality of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS is ensured by a variety of tuned components. The high-quality carbon fiber cone, rubber surround, and silk dome tweeters contribute to a clear and precise sound image. The Crossover, which operates at 3800 Hz with a 24 dB/octave network, allows for a seamless transition between frequencies. The use of high-quality air coils and Mylar capacitors enhances acoustic precision. This combination of material and design choices ensures that the system meets audiophile standards and achieves a harmonious sound.

What materials are used in the construction of the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS?

The Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS utilizes a range of materials that, in combination, provide an outstanding sound experience. The aluminum die-cast basket of the mid-bass driver ensures a stable foundation. The carbon fiber cone and the dust cap, also made of carbon fiber, ensure acoustic precision. A rubber surround helps the diaphragm minimize edge resonances. The tweeter housings are made of aluminum, contributing to mechanical stability and not distorting the sound. Mylar capacitors and air coils in the Crossover complete the design, which is aimed at the highest audio quality.

What application area is the Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS particularly suitable for?

The Sundown Audio SA-6.5CS is particularly suitable for demanding audio applications. With an RMS power of 250 watts and 4 Ohm impedance, the system is ideal for both OEM and demanding aftermarket environments. Thanks to high-quality features like the carbon fiber cone and silk dome tweeters, it offers a detailed sound spectrum that shines in high-fidelity installations. The precisely tuned Crossover allows for impressive acoustic resolution. Therefore, it is especially suitable for those who value accurate music reproduction, such as in home and car hi-fi systems.
