The Sundown Audio SLD series, which includes the SLD-12 12-inch shallow subwoofer, can be considered a "reboot" of the SD-2 line from 2011. The SD-2 was essentially a "shallow SA v1"—that is, it had the same cone, surround, and spider as the SA, but a shorter motor with a shorter coil. Starting with the 3rd generation (SD-3), the SD series took a different direction—more towards SQ and sealed enclosures (this also applies to the SD-4 series). Due to high demand, we launched the SLD series to bring back a highly abuse-tolerant "shallow" series that works well with open enclosures!

Similar to the current SD-4 series, we have used solid pole pieces, so the SLD can also be mounted directly on the rear enclosure wall to reduce the required net depth. Compared to the old SD-2, we have introduced numerous important upgrades: pole piece channels for reduced air noise and improved cooling, top plate "slots" for better cooling and less distortion, as well as a magnet ID shorting ring. Regarding long-term reliability, we have also screwed the tooth ring, assembled the motor with screws, screwed on the aluminum pole cap, and added "Mini-XL" lead wires to ensure flawless operation for many years.

Frequently Asked Questions about SLD-12

What are the performance specifications of the Sundown Audio SLD-12?

The Sundown Audio SLD-12 Subwoofer has an RMS power of 600 watts. It features a 2.5-inch aluminum voice coil designed specifically for heat dissipation. The subwoofer boasts a high Xmax of 12 mm in one direction at 70% BL, with a maximum mechanical excursion (Xmech) of 25 mm, meaning it can handle significant cone movement to produce deep frequencies. The sensitivity is 88.1 dB at 1W/1m, indicating a relatively high efficiency that can be optimally utilized with powerful amplifiers.

What technical features define the Sundown Audio SLD-12?

The SLD-12 Subwoofer from Sundown Audio is characterized by several technical features. It has solid pole pieces for improved ventilation and cooling of the voice coil, which is important for thermal stability. Its specially designed EMD-cut top plate reduces distortion and promotes heat dissipation. Another critical feature is the magnet ID shorting ring, which increases efficiency and minimizes harmonic distortion. Additionally, the mini-XL litz wires are sewn in to prevent fatigue and minimize downtime. Durability is ensured by the robust bolted motor construction.

What are the Thiele/Small parameters of the SLD-12 Subwoofer?

The Thiele/Small parameters of the SLD-12 D2 model are as follows: RE is 3.65 ohms, the resonance frequency (FS) is 42.959 Hz, and the equivalent volume (VAS) is rated at 26.889 liters. The electrical quality factor Qes is 0.691 and the mechanical Qms is 2.227, resulting in a combined Qts of 0.415. The moving mass (Mms) is 204.319 grams and the compliance of the suspension (Cms) is 67.177 uM/N. These values play a crucial role in the tuning capability and box matching of the subwoofer.

How is the Sundown Audio SLD-12 to be integrated into a cabinet?

For the installation of the Sundown Audio SLD-12, you should consider the dimensions: The outer diameter is 31.9 cm, the cutout is 28.2 cm, and the depth is 13.8 cm. A volume of 28 liters is recommended for a sealed enclosure, while a vented enclosure should provide 42 liters of volume to deliver the best acoustic results. A tuning frequency of 35 Hz is suggested, with a port area of 170 cm². These specifications ensure optimal performance and sound quality in your vehicle or specific audio environment.

What improvements does the Sundown Audio SLD series offer over previous models?

The Sundown Audio SLD series offers many significant upgrades over the older SD-2 models. These include sturdier pole pieces and specialized ventilation channels to reduce air noise and improve cooling. The SLD series features an improved top plate design that not only optimizes heat dissipation but also reduces distortion. Another technical advancement is the integration of a magnet ID shorting ring, which enhances the overall performance and efficiency of the subwoofer. The bolted motor construction provides greater stability and durability in use. These features make the SLD series the ideal choice for demanding applications.

How compatible is the Sundown Audio SLD-12 with different car types?

The Sundown Audio SLD-12 is particularly compatible with vehicles that offer limited installation space due to its shallow design. The depth is 13.8 cm, making it ideal for installation in tight areas, such as directly against the back wall of the trunk. Its dimensions allow for mounting in many common vehicle models. Although no specific car brands are mentioned in the product description, it is advisable to check the available space in the vehicle and consider the specific installation specifications, such as an outer diameter of 31.9 cm and a cutout of 28.2 cm.

What cooling measures does the Sundown Audio SLD-12 have?

The Sundown Audio SLD-12 features several innovative measures for effective cooling that ensure its performance under heavy loads. The 2.5-inch voice coil former is made of black aluminum, which provides excellent heat dissipation. The pole pieces are treated with high-speed ventilation channels to quickly dissipate heat. Additionally, the top plate slots are precisely positioned to maximize airflow over the copper voice coil and minimize unwanted distortion. These features ensure consistent cooling and extend the lifespan of the subwoofer.

What is the significance of the magnet ID short-circuit ring in the SLD-12?

The magnet ID short-circuit ring in the Sundown Audio SLD-12 improves efficiency and significantly reduces harmonic distortion. It works by directing the magnetic flux more efficiently and minimizing the eddy currents that can occur at high volumes. This results in a cleaner, clearer sound, especially at high levels, and reduces the thermal stress on the motor system. The ring also contributes to the stability of playback for dynamic music pieces. This is essential when you want maximum power with minimal distortion, especially during long listening sessions or in professional applications.

What types of enclosures is the Sundown Audio SLD-12 suitable for?

The Sundown Audio SLD-12 is versatile and can be integrated into various types of enclosures. For a sealed enclosure, a volume of 28 liters is recommended, allowing for precise and tight bass reproduction. Open enclosures that provide a volume of 42 liters extend the frequency range downward and deliver deeper bass, which is advantageous in larger rooms or cars. The recommended tuning is 35 Hz with a port area of 170 cm² to achieve the best acoustic properties and ensure that the subwoofer can operate optimally.

What materials are used in the SLD-12 to reduce fatigue and failures?

In the Sundown Audio SLD-12, high-quality materials are used to minimize component fatigue and failure. The voice coil is made of 4-layer copper wire to handle high temperatures and prevent power loss. The sewn "Mini-XL" ribbon cables that are integrated are more resistant to mechanical stress and reduce material fatigue. This construction not only enhances performance but also the longevity of the subwoofer. These features are particularly important if you plan to use the subwoofer in high-stress environments or at consistently high volume levels.
